Web Application Scanning

I'm currently looking to run the burp tool against several web applications in different environments. I've read through the basic scan guide and was thinking of starting with just a active scan and or passive scan and dive further into all of burp capabilities from there. My question is, is there a best approach to elevating scan capabilities within burp? Or a good starting point and build from that? Any suggestions are very appreciated.
