Unable to install Burp on Mac catalina

Manu | Last updated: Jan 30, 2020 05:27PM UTC

Getting he following error when opening the installer on macOS Catalina “Burp Suite COMMUNITY Installer.app” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information. Will there be an update to allow installation on the latest macOS?

Hi, There is currently a workaround for the issue that you are seeing. If you do a Control+click on the DMG file (essentially a right-click) you open up the context menu. You should then be able to select Open and the warning message that you subsequently see displayed should now have an Open button available allowing you to proceed with the installation. We do have a feature request in our development backlog to notarize the installation files for Mac, which would eliminate this issue and enable the Mac to trust the application by default.

I right-clicked on the .dmg, clicked Open, then the Installer app becomes visible, so I right-clicked on that and clicked Open again, and this shows up, just like before: “Burp Suite Community Edition Installer.app” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information. This item is on the disk image “burpsuite_community_macos_v2020_9_1.dmg”. Safari downloaded this disk image today at 09:51 from portswigger.net.

Hi, If you are trying to use Burp in a corporate environment then it is possible that the security settings are locked down and you will not be able to use the suggested workaround. Our developers have been busy working on notarizing the MacOS installation files and these should be in place for the next release of Burp.

OK thank you, yes I'm indeed in a corporate environment. I'll wait for the next release to be able to use the Burp Suite. Cheers, Milad

We have now set up app notarization on the Mac installer. This means that you should no longer encounter the malicious software check error when running the installer. Please let us know if you have any issues with this in the future.
