Recovery Upon Burp Crash

David | Last updated: Dec 01, 2016 07:10AM UTC

Burp crashes and I need to recover results/findings of the scan. Burp used to offer automatic backups but that's no longer available in v1.7.x. Is there a way to recover the many hours of lost scan results ? I'm using the licensed version. Thanks!!

Hi David Thanks for your message. It sounds like you aren't using Burp Projects to save your work? Burp project files are a replacement for the existing state file functionality, and are significantly superior in various ways: Data is saved automatically in real time. There is no need to specifically save your work when you are finished. If Burp exits abnormally, all its data is preserved. Burp reopens project files considerably faster than state files. In our testing, project files that are several gigabytes in size can be reopened in a few seconds. A problem with Burp's non-incremental automatic backup feature, where each periodic backup consumed more and more disk space, has gone away. All data is held in the project file, including some items that were not previously included in state files, such as the Scanner's issue activity log. - http://blog.portswigger.net/2016/04/introducing-burp-projects.html - https://portswigger.net/burp/help/suite_burp_projects.html

Hi Frank Thanks for your message. At what point during the start up does Burp Suite crash? Do you see any error messages?

I am using BURP projects (v1.7.22) so my work is supposed to be automatically saved to the project file. When I tried to open the project file, I got a message the file was corrupt and BURP would attempt to recover the data. After creating a new project file for the recovered data, I am not able to open either file. I'm losing several days work if I can not recover the project file. Can you assist me in any way? Thanks Mike B

Hi Mike Thanks for your message. Please email support@portswigger.net with details of the event that caused the corruption (e.g. OS termination), your platform etc., and (if at all possible) a copy of the affected project file.

I've had multiple Burp project files become corrupted when OSX crashes. The recovery process says burp.iv: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /var/folders/77/np[...snip...]00gn/T/burp745[...snip...]58.tmp/1 (No such file or directory) There is valuable yet sensitive information inside of this project. Even if I cannot continue the project, I would like to get as much as possible out for a report.
