project file stops populating proxy history

Vida | Last updated: Mar 02, 2020 11:48AM UTC

Hi, I had a weird and annoying experience in the last few days. I'm running burp v2020.1 on Windows 7. After a while, the project file stops populating the proxy history. Say, I have 2500 items, I close burp, and if I re-open the project, only 2000 requests are shown. Every time thereafter I open this file, all requests are gone above the 2000. I assume there are nothing confidential in it, so here is my debug id: c511bf9c5ecd4feb27ae:p4ka

Hi We haven't had any exceptions reported from your debug ID. If you save a copy of your project file when you are at 2500 items, does that copied file contain all 2500, or does it revert back to 2000? Do you have sufficient disk space available to save your latest data?

Hi, when I use Project top menu and Save a copy, I got all the requests saved. Disk space shouldn't be an issue. How can I help you investigating this? I understand it's a strange stuff, but it is totally repeatable in my environment.

I figured out something that may help. My environment: Windows 7 guest in VirtualBox, the host is a debian. The project file is saved to a shared directory (which is a network drive from the perspective of the Windows). If the project file resides on this shared directory, the data loss happens. However, if the project file is on the Windows file system (e.g. on the Desktop), everything works fine. I don't know if it counts, but the site I'm testing is accessible via VPN, so I have this connection as well while testing.

The issue sounds like it is due to the project being in the shared directory. Project files are accessed as memory-mapped files and OS support for this is variable, especially on networked drives. We recommend you use a local hard drive for project files.

Yes, I guess so too. It's just weird, because I've been working like this for years and no such thing ever happened before.

In 2020.1, some causes of project file corruption were resolved (https://portswigger.net/burp/releases/professional-community-2020-1). It could be that these changes have prevented you from saving in a networked drive, as that can cause corruption to project files. You can copy your project file to the host or elsewhere when you finish working on it.
