Launch Burp Suite Professional from the Command Line using the exe file

Jose | Last updated: Mar 05, 2021 05:26PM UTC

I've been looking for documentation for using the Burp exe file to launch Burp from the command line. I am able to launch Burp but I am unable to get past the project or configuration menus. Are there any switches that can be used to manage Burp Suite from the command line using the exe file? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi Jose, Just to clarify, are you looking to run Burp from the command line (in a headless manner without a GUI) or do you simply want to launch Burp from the command line? If it is the former then Burp Professional has been designed as a desktop GUI application so there is a fairly limited subset of functionality available to you if you do wish to run Burp in a headless way. The following page details how to do this via the standalone Jar file version of Burp: https://portswigger.net/burp/documentation/desktop/getting-started/launching/command-line

Thank you for your response. I would just like to launch Burp from the command line but I would like to use the exe instead of the jar file. Are there any flags/switches that would permit this using the executable file?

Hi Jose,

If you launch Burp via the executable file then this will simply launch Burp in the normal manner and initiate the GUI - based on the details of your first message I do not believe that this is what you want (you mentioned that you are unable to get past the configuration menus that appear so i am assuming you do not want to handle these via the GUI?).

In essence, are you looking to use Burp via the command line, in the manner of the headless Burp that i described previously, but using the exe file rather than the jar?

that is exactly what I am trying to do. Not sure if this is something that is possible but if there is a way to do this or some documentation I can refer to, that would be great. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.
