install macOS Catalina

Bobby | Last updated: Oct 16, 2019 12:35AM UTC

Getting he following error when opening the installer on macOS Catalina “Burp Suite Professional Installer.app” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information. Will there be an update to allow installation on the latest macOS?

Hi Bobby, Thank you for your message. This is something that we are aware of and are currently looking into. In the mean time you should be able to get around this issue by performing the following steps. Double click the the burpsuite_pro_macos_v2_1_04.dmg file in order to mount it. This should open a new BurpSuitePro window with the Burp Suite Professional Installer present. If you then perform a control-click action on the installer file and select Open from the resulting context menu the installation dialog should then appear and give you the option to Open the installer and proceed with the installation. Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

I'm having the same problem and the 'Open' option does not appear after control-click-ing the icon. I'm doing this on a company laptop which might have some restrictions around this. How can I proceed?

Tamas | Last updated: Mar 13, 2020 02:51PM UTC

Sorry, the open option appears in the menu. But clicking it does not let me install the software.

Hi Tamas, Right clicking on the .dmg and then .app files should overwrite any restrictions. Have you tried any of the recommendations in the following pages from Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202491 https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh40616/mac Cheers Ben Wright Technical Product Specialist PortSwigger Web Security

Hi, Can you confirm which version of Burp you are trying to install? Do you get any feedback from the installer when it stops?

Vicki | Last updated: May 20, 2020 03:58PM UTC

I'm having the same issue. This is a work computer with attendant security, but the "control-click open" method does nothing for me. I just DL-ed the installer from your site, "v2020_4_1". I'm running Catalina 10.15.4. The installer does not run at all. > “Burp Suite Community Edition Installer.app” can’t be opened because Apple cannot > check it for malicious software. > This item is on the disk image “burpsuite_community_macos_v2020_4_1.dmg”. Hi Vicki, As noted earlier in the thread, this is something that we are aware of and we do plan to notarize our Mac installer so this is not a problem in the future. Currently, however, if your company security policy precludes you from installing unsigned applications then you will face issues. In the meantime, would your company allow you to run Burp on a virtual machine? Burp Professional is licensed per user, not per installation, so if that was allowed, you could use Burp on a virtual machine, and then once the notarization issue is resolved, install it again on your Mac.

Nothing helped me, any control-clicks. The .dmg file just saying: "The application Burp Suite Professional Installer can't be opened" and that's all

Hi Anatoli, What MacOS are you running? Are you using this on a company machine that might have stringent security controls in place?

Mike | Last updated: May 29, 2020 04:59PM UTC

Our company has a security policy that does not allow me to install this until it is verified with Apple. Do you have any estimate on when you will have this issue resolved? It seems that this has been a known issue for almost a year now.

Ben, PortSwigger Agent | Last updated: Jun 01, 2020 07:21AM UTC

Hi, Our developers are about to start working on implementing this and we will report back to this thread when we have some further news.

Mike | Last updated: Jun 01, 2020 03:54PM UTC

Great, thanks for replying Ben! Looking forward to hearing more once more news is available.

Kyle | Last updated: Jun 10, 2020 06:12PM UTC

I, too, am having this issue. Is there any timeframe for update?

Ben, PortSwigger Agent | Last updated: Jun 11, 2020 05:35PM UTC

Hi, We are not able to provide any further ETA for this at the moment. As noted, we will update the thread when we have some news to share.

Anudeep | Last updated: Jul 08, 2020 03:19PM UTC

Go to system preferences -> security and privacy. Check if there is an alert asking you to click "Open Anyway" to proceed with the installation. I got it working by this step.

Mike | Last updated: Jul 08, 2020 06:04PM UTC

@Anudeep: That lets you install it anyway, as do the instructions in the first comment in this thread, but it still doesn't resolve the issue of people working at jobs that require properly signed software. I'm still looking forward to being able to use this software at my job to help do penetration testing, but unfortunately I'm not permitted to do so until this issue is resolved.

We have now set up app notarization on the Mac installer. This means that you should no longer encounter the malicious software check error when running the installer. Please let us know if you have any issues with this in the future.

Hi Pradesh, What version of Burp Enterprise are you trying to install and what version of MacOS are you using?
