prakash | Last updated: Oct 06, 2021 09:27AM UTC

Dear Team, one of our customer has purchased few burpsuite licenses. as per their query, they need to change the machine so burpsuite license must be installed there. there are 5 licenses which they are using. please let me know the steps to revoke/uninstall licensee from one machine and install on another one.

Hi Prakash, Each Burp Professional license comes with a handful of activations that allow users to install and activate Burp on more than one machine, by default. The way that the current licensing system works means that you cannot 'deactivate' an installation of Burp (the used activation will always count against the activation total for the license in question). Assuming that they still have activations available on their licenses then they should simply need to apply their license to the new installation when prompted. If necessary, we can provide additional activations to users that need them in order to circumvent the above restriction but, in the first instance, please double check whether your customer can simply activate the new installation of Burp as normal.

Thanks Ben.. actually customer is asking, in case that machines crashes or issue with that installed and licensed burpsuite, can we reinstall this license to another machine? considering we will have 5 licenses and we can use it anywhere (within 5 licenses).

Hi Prakash, As noted above, if there are still activations available on their 5 user license then yes, they will be able to install Burp on more machines without any issues. If they have used up all their activations (Burp will give out an error message if this is the case) then they (or you) would just need to email us at support@portswigger.net and include some details about the license they are using so that we can assist further. The only real requirement with the licensing model is that each individual that will ever use Burp needs to have a valid license. The 5 user license that your customer has means that 5 individual people are licensed to use Burp (and they can each install and use Burp on more than one machine). If a sixth person needed to use Burp then a further license would need to be purchased - that sixth individual could not just use up one of the activations available on the 5 user license.
