Please can you try updating to the latest free edition of Burp and see if that helps?

I have the same issue with Burp Pro version 1.6.30 and java version 1.7.0_85. Only solution I've found for now is to roll back to at least java 1.7.0_79 and keep it back.

@Dafydd: I have tried to upgrade to latest free Burp... the same issue occurs.

We have just tested Burp Suite using these conditions. Burp Suite Free Edition 1.60.30 Java Version 1.7.0_85 Kali Linux 2.0 We were able to run Burp Suite with no issues.

I have the same issue of crashing and logging out as well. Additionally, when I log back in, the quick bar is gone along with a few other options I have to re-initiate in the settings. I also had this issue with OWASP ZAP. Totally sucks! I can't do anything and i've reinstalled Kali Linux and upgraded/updated everything.

This isn't an issue we have been able to replicate. Have you tried using the Oracle version of Java?

Burp User | Last updated: Nov 16, 2015 01:58PM UTC

Liam, have you tested this with Java 1.8.0_40 ? This seems to be the latest version, or should we be looking to roll back our Java to 1.7.0_85?

Liam, PortSwigger Agent | Last updated: Nov 16, 2015 02:00PM UTC

Hi Andy We haven't tested Burp on Kali Linux using Java version 1.8.0_40. Have you had an issue with it?

Burp User | Last updated: Nov 17, 2015 12:43PM UTC

Hi Liam, I double checked my Java version on Kali 2.0. I am using Java version 1.7.0_85 but it still crashes. It will run for a few seconds but even doing something as simple as resizing the window reboots my entire machine?

Liam, PortSwigger Agent | Last updated: Nov 17, 2015 01:07PM UTC

Having tested Burp on that version of Kali and Java, we have confirmed its not an issue with Burp. Have you tried using an earlier version of Java? Another user has had better luck with Java 1.7.0_79.

Hi Liam, funny you should say that. Just tried Burp with 1.7.0_79 on a VM and all works great...now wondering how I can "downgrade" the laptop install of Kali to test stability!

Let us know how your testing goes Andy. Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

Hi, I have the same problem with version 1.7.85. When starting burp the x-windows session dies. All programs are closed and I have to login again. Reverting to version 1.7.75 seems to resolve the issue. Note: I run Kali in vmware. The following error shows up: [ 70573.599] (EE) Backtrace: [ 70573.599] (EE) 0: /usr/bin/Xorg (xorg_backtrace+0x52) [0xb768a512] [ 70573.599] (EE) 1: /usr/bin/Xorg (0xb74e8000+0x1a67e2) [0xb768e7e2] [ 70573.599] (EE) 2: linux-gate.so.1 (__kernel_rt_sigreturn+0x0) [0xb74c6bc8] [ 70573.599] (EE) 3: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpixman-1.so.0 (0xb72dd000+0x74e36) [0xb7351e36] [ 70573.599] (EE) 4: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpixman-1.so.0 (0xb72dd000+0x58fbf) [0xb7335fbf] [ 70573.599] (EE) 5: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpixman-1.so.0 (pixman_fill+0x3a) [0xb72e38ea] [ 70573.599] (EE) 6: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libfb.so (fbFill+0x383) [0xb44fa3d3] [ 70573.599] (EE) 7: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libfb.so (fbPolyFillRect+0x1c0) [0xb44fab80] [ 70573.599] (EE) 8: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vmware_drv.so (0xb6b2a000+0x1af6a) [0xb6b44f6a] [ 70573.599] (EE) 9: /usr/bin/Xorg (0xb74e8000+0x1280ca) [0xb76100ca] [ 70573.599] (EE) 10: /usr/bin/Xorg (0xb74e8000+0x1146d4) [0xb75fc6d4] [ 70573.599] (EE) 11: /usr/bin/Xorg (miCompositeRects+0x92) [0xb75fc782] [ 70573.599] (EE) 12: /usr/bin/Xorg (CompositeRects+0x5b) [0xb75fffab] [ 70573.600] (EE) 13: /usr/bin/Xorg (0xb74e8000+0x11c6fd) [0xb76046fd] [ 70573.600] (EE) 14: /usr/bin/Xorg (0xb74e8000+0x11844e) [0xb760044e] [ 70573.600] (EE) 15: /usr/bin/Xorg (0xb74e8000+0x3dff6) [0xb7525ff6] [ 70573.600] (EE) 16: /usr/bin/Xorg (0xb74e8000+0x421df) [0xb752a1df] [ 70573.600] (EE) 17: /usr/bin/Xorg (0xb74e8000+0x2bf0a) [0xb7513f0a] [ 70573.600] (EE) 18: /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xf3) [0xb709ea63] [ 70573.600] (EE) 19: /usr/bin/Xorg (0xb74e8000+0x2bf48) [0xb7513f48] [ 70573.600] (EE) [ 70573.600] (EE) Segmentation fault at address 0x0 [ 70573.600] (EE) Fatal server error: [ 70573.600] (EE) Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Hi John Thanks for your message and the additional information. We are also running Kali in VMware and experiencing no issues with version 1.7.85.

Burp User | Last updated: Nov 19, 2015 05:16PM UTC

Hi,Liam as suggested, i have tried the oracle java in my kali linux that runs in virtualbox. Till now it is stable and hope it stays so. I will post the update for the same. As john has pointed out with respect to the logs showing that X-window closes the same issue occurred to me. However, I hope there is something wrong with the latest java update that is messing with the system and causing it to crash.. Lets see what occurs next. Fingers crossed.

I was having the same problem as krapesh, john and others with Kali crashing when using Burp. I manually upgraded my version of Java to version 8 and the problem is fixed. I found a tutorial on Youtube and followed it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6DcI294U6k

Anyone have issues with: When I click on the .jar it opens it like a directory, nothing happens. I'm running: Linux kali-linux-2016 4.3.0-kali1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.3.5-1kali1 (2016-02-11) x86_64 GNU/Linux java version "1.7.0_91" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.6.3) (7u91-2.6.3-1) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.91-b01, mixed mode) Any leads?
