Burp Context Sub-Menu Broken

new | Last updated: Aug 09, 2023 12:27AM UTC

Host - Windows Server 2016 Datacenter 10.0.14393 N/A Build 14393 Version - Burp Suite Pro v2023.8.1-22449 (running in a VM) Channel - Currently Early Adopter but also tested on Stable with same result. When I right-click anywhere that allows for bringing up the context menu, upon hovering over or clicking the arrow to bring up the associated sub-menu, nothing happens. There have been a few instances where Burp will allow a pop-up to select but there is a serious lag and subsequently only allowed once. For example, I want to send a specific http request to an Extension but the Extension sub-menu to select which Extension, the menu doesn't present itself. I have restarted Burp many times as well as the host computer but to no avail. Note: I've also experienced this with Windows 10 in the past but the issue seemed to "magically" resolve itself without any intentional invocation. Lastly, I have seen similar posts where users are running into the same issue but all of these posts end with the support agent asking for submission of anonymous feedback. I understand that this helps the support folks resolve unique issues for the users but it doesn't help a user attempt to expeditiously resolve an issue on their own. Sometimes it's just a setting or quick fix that needs to be implemented vs. waiting for a support agent to respond - asking more questions. Before I un/reinstall Burp I wanted to see if there are any resolutions to the problem. Thank you.

Hi. Could you try unloading all your extensions and see if the problem persists? Could you also tell me if you are using a temporary or disk-based project file?

Thank you for the follow up. I am using a disk-based project file. I actually restarted Burp with extensions disabled before reading your reply and the issue was no longer present. I normally have a lot of extensions running without any issues but I haven't run into the issue in a while before this presented itself again. I understand that using many extensions puts a strain on the host machine's performance but I'm curious why the random appearance. My first thought was that the Sharpener extension was the culprit since it allows for additional management of the application interfaces but unloading this was not a solution. I may need to test for the presence of the context sub-menu bug after loading each extension one-by-one. I also opened Burp today and noticed an update so maybe this addresses it. Thanks again!

Hi You can bulk enable or disable extensions by selecting a couple with shift+click, then right-clicking and using the context menu actions. Large numbers of extensions can cause a high impact on Burp, which is why we introduced the "Estimated system impact" bat to the "Extensions > Installed" tab. We'd recommend only having the extensions loaded that you are actively using at any one time. If you find that a specific extension is triggering this issue, please let us know so we can contact the author to look into it further.
