Burp CA Certificate

Mike | Last updated: Aug 06, 2020 11:57PM UTC

I'm trying to download the certificate and import it into Firefox. Burp is my proxy. It's working as Burp is intercepting traffic. I am going to http://burpsuite. When I get there, it says: Burp Suite Community Edition Error Unknown host: burpsuite Can I not do this with the community edition? Is there another way to get a certificate exported from Burp? Thanks!

Hi Mike, Is there a LAN proxy in place in your environment that gives you access to the internet? If so, you need to configure the details of this proxy under User options -> Connections -> Upstream Proxy Servers so that any outbound requests from Burp are sent to your proxy rather than directly to the destination web server.

This answer Does not make sense. The issue is not that burp is not forwarding the request to the right webserver. Cause the domain in question is burpsuite which is not a real FQDN. It was supposed to be intercepted by burp and returned with a CA certificate like those "View in Browser" links that also get intercepted and handled by burp. The issue is that the browser does not know what to do with the domain because it does not resolve to any IP address. Therefore it does not reach burp in the first place. TLDR :/ How I solved it Add 127.0.0.1 burpsuite to the hosts file /etc/hosts for linux C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts for windows To download the CA certificate you have to add the burp bind port to the domain. the Domain would look like http://burpsuite:8080/ for the default binding port P.S. IMHO all this should have been automated by burp or it should not be directing users to go to that domain
