Burp 2020.12.1 Stuck!!!

eran | Last updated: Dec 22, 2020 03:28PM UTC

Hi Portswigger, First of all, I want to thank you for creating that beast called Burp! This is the daily tool I used for Penetration Testing activities. I have a pro license BurpSuite and I'm updating Burp to the latest version 2020.12.1 but it stuck like hell and i can't use it for my work anymore. I'm using Burp Community 2020.9.1 and it works much much better. I have disabled all of the extensions and it's not helps. Please advice

Thanks for your message. Could you tell us a little bit more about what you are seeing, please? At what stage does Burp Suite Professional get stuck with the latest version? Is this during the upgrade process or after you have launched it and are carrying out specific tasks? Which OS are you using?

I'm using a windows 10 machine with the latest Burp Suite (as I mentioned), I just open a new chromium-browser and start using it, then when I just start intercept requests, the whole instance gets stuck and not responds.

Thanks for the details, can I ask a few more questions so I can understand your setup better, please? Is the Intercept button on the Proxy tab set to on or off when Burp gets stuck? If Intercept is set to On, are you able to forward any of the requests? Is this happening with all sites or just certain ones? Do you see the same issue if you are using a different browser or does it only happen when you use the embedded browser?

I know how to use Burp Suite properly and I am using it for more than 5 years. This is something with the new version. (i have both windows and mac and it's happening on both of them). Please take it further with the teams, I'm waiting for the new update to come and fix this situation. Thanks

And answers for your questions: Is this happening with all sites or just certain ones? Yes Do you see the same issue if you are using a different browser or does it only happen when you use the embedded browser? Yes (on both of them).

Thanks for getting back to me. I apologize for asking what might seem like basic questions but I have been unable to replicate the issue here so far. I was trying to understand at what stage things got stuck, whether this was during a specific task such as forwarding events, maybe even when forwarding a specific request, or if it happened when browsing normally via Burp so I could take the same steps as yourself to reproduce it. I didn't mean to suggest that there was an issue with how Burp was being used. Could you send me a screen recording of what's happening on your machine and the output from Help -> Diagnostics to support@portswigger.net, please? This might help us to reproduce the issue and would give us something we can share with the developers to help explain the issue. Do you have User Options -> Misc -> Submit anonymous feedback about Burp's performance enabled?

I have installed burp-2002-12-1 Pro Licensed version on a Windows 10 machine having 26Gb of RAM. On running Burp with default settings and burp browser, the Burp gets hanged during Audit with memory consumption showing 19.6 Gb. There is some bug in the Burp. I have tried multiple times over the week with the same result. I anyone from PortSwigger wants to see 1st hand, I can provide anydesk or any remote desktop software for having 1st hand experience.

This issue happens also on Kali Linux. It happens every time I start the Burp Pro using temporary projects. It remains unresponsive on the Dashboard page and I need to kill the Burp process. One workaround I've seen is to move to the proxy tab right after the interface is loaded.
