Ability to customize the project files to save space?

Adrian | Last updated: Aug 17, 2016 02:39PM UTC

I noticed that the "saving state" functionality is due to be replaced by the new project file functionality in the future. Is there any way to customize what is saved to a project file in the current version of Burp, or is this a planned feature? I ask because my save state files are usually much smaller than project files, probably because I can tell Burp to only save in-scope items.

Thanks for this feedback. It is indeed in our roadmap to provide some new features in this area, notably: 1. A way of saving a copy of a project file containing only in-scope data. 2. A way of saving a copy of a project file that prunes deleted data (so you can manually delete unwanted items and then save a smaller copy of the project file). 3. A way of telling Burp not to capture out-of-scope data at all, whether in the Proxy history, site map, etc., so that it never gets into the project file in the first place. We're not actively working on these features yet but they are in our near-term pipeline (for some meaning of "near"). (As well as the inclusion of out-of-scope data, another reason why project files can be larger than state files is because they are not compressed. While state files are saved as a ZIP stream, data in project files is stored as-is. This is a design decision because we want to have random access to project data at the individual byte level, without the need for stream IO that is expensive in terms of computation and memory. Basically, we decided that Burp users would prefer speed and scalability over smaller project files.)
