504 Gateway Timeout

Dariel | Last updated: Jan 04, 2022 08:30PM UTC

Hello, I am using Burp Suite Professional and when completing the labs it randomly gives me an 504 Gateway Timeout. I have to close the lab completely and load it again, which consumes time because it does it quite a lot. Is it related to my proxy or are the labs configured to drop the connection when I take some time to send traffic through Burp? I am on FireFox using FoxyProxy.

Thanks for your message. We've not had any other reports of this issue when using Firefox, do you see the same issue if you use Burp's embedded browser? Is this happening consistently with specific labs? Are you leaving the lab idle for any length of time, if so roughly how long do you think it might be, e.g. more than say 15-30 minutes?

It is happening with particular websites. It does not matter if you use burp chromium browser or any other browser. It is a new phenomenon affecting us all when using burp. So, yes I have the same issue on Burps embedded browser. It is not a timeout issue. It is happening on first request.

Also, I am getting these when working on bug bounties on hackerone.com. And they are for particular sites. Not for all sites.

I have figured it out. It happens when you add the particular sites to in-scope URL on the target tab of burp pro.

I have met the same Gateway error. It seems that Port swigger is generating test website URL only for certain amount of time. https://xxxx.web-security-academy.net/login I requested new generated URL via "ACCESS THE LAB" button from lab page and it works. https://yyyy.web-security-academy.net/login

If a lab is left idle, it will timeout after around 15 minutes. You can access a new copy of the same lab by clicking on the 'Access Lab' link again.

Hi Which lab were you working on when you saw this?

Yvan | Last updated: Aug 22, 2024 10:39AM UTC

Hi i cant seem to access the Lab: DOM XSS in document.write sink using source location.search inside a select element it doesnt load and shows a 504 error. i tried different browsers, cleared cache/cookies and used burp's embedded browser. this problem is only for this specific lab and yes i tried again after some time and still wont load.

Hi I've just checked this lab and was able to launch it. We have had some intermittent issues where the labs have not launched immediately but have after a few attempts that the team are looking into, so this may be related. Please let us know if you can access the lab if you try again now.

I had the same issue with (Lab: SameSite Lax bypass via method override) and few other labs
